In the classic romance film, "Debbie Reynolds' The Unsinkable Molly", the title character (Debbie Reynolds) is a country girl who wants to marry a rich man. When her boyfriend, Johnny Brown, strikes it rich in the gold rush, Molly heads to Europe and makes a dramatic return trip on the Titanic. While there, she meets a mysterious stranger, whom she falls in love with.

Unfortunately, Tom, a cab driver, and his wife, Agnes, can't afford the wedding, so Agnes invites even more guests than she can afford, which complicates things. Agnes' relationship with her daughter and her husband is complicated by the fact that Agnes is throwing a lavish affair for her daughter.
Although it received less critical acclaim than "Marty," "The Catered Affair" still won the National Board of Review's award for best supporting actress. The film begins with Jane Hurley announcing her engagement to Ralph Halloran (Ernest Borgnine), a man she's known for three years. The family reacts in a tepid fashion, with Aggie responding, "Well, that's nice," while Tom (Bette Davis) remains mute until his wife prods him into saying something.
Although the film started as a family drama centered on Jane's wedding, it quickly becomes a story about her parents' relationship. Aggie offers her daughter Jane advice about marriage, noting that it requires sacrifices. It is important to put children first and not just throw money around. However, it's easy to see why the couple didn't make it work. It's a sappy tale, but it isn't one you'll soon forget.

This novel was adapted into a 1991-1993 British miniseries, which starred Catherine Zeta-Jones as the character Debbie Reynolds plays in The Mating Game.
The Mating Game is a light comedy film with great sight gags and surprising performances from Paul Douglas and Una Merkel. There are some questionable elements in the film, however. However, this is a great movie if you're looking for a good laugh and some good wholesome family fun. This film is recommended for those who enjoy a light comedy with some questionable elements. The Mating Game is a great example of Debbie Reynolds' versatility as an actress.
